Doing great work is enough to get by at a regular job, but it’s insufficient if you’re a professional in the television, music, or film business.

That is why mainstream career books are useless in our industry.

Those authors don’t understand that to grow in your “showbiz” career, you have to learn not just how to do creative work…

but you must also learn how to make a living off your creative work (it’s a huge difference!).

You see, career development is the process of improving your ability to achieve success in your field of work. (In plain English, career development is how you get better at landing the job you want, at the pay you want. Important stuff, right?)

Master career development and you’ll thrive as a working creative professional.

Ignore it, and you’ll stay stuck as a starving artist.

You see, your current boss will never give you an urgent deadline to improve your personal brand, professional network, or earning potential. And why would she? Those are the very assets that will open up a steady stream of new opportunities for you, and help you get that next job.

Career development is how you grow those essential elements in your work life. And is where we boil down those big ideas into stuff that works for your specific career needs.

Your friends who work traditional 9-5 jobs have it easy.

There is a well defined career development process for them to follow.  The job title hierarchy is set (from supervisor… to manager… to executive) and so is the ladder that needs to be climbed. In most industries, the landscape changes are predicted years in advance, and there are always continuing education classes that teach the most up to date information.

It’s different when you work in music, television, and film.

Turnover is high, which makes any org chart meaningless as soon as it’s written. It’s not uncommon for an intern to leapfrog her way to the top in just a few years, or for an executive to fall completely out of the business before he hits 50.

New technology, wider globalization, decaying business models, shifting consumer trends, or a mix of the four makes staying current in our business both necessary and impossible. Being seen as a “veteran”, in the usual sense, is a liability in the new entertainment industry.

So, how does a creative professional thrive and grow in this unpredictable business?

There is a way to get ahead that works, even in music and showbiz.

I’m a working professional in entertainment, just like you. I got my start as a Music Journalist, then transitioned into television as an Interactive Producer for on-air shows.

After years of skipping from one great gig to another, I had a stint where I was unemployed for 6 straight months. That was triple the time I thought I would be out of work, and double the time my savings allowed for!

I wanted someone to blame for my drought, but I didn’t know if it was my “incompetent” headhunter or the “lousy” economy.

I read all of the career advice that I could, but I found the books were too general, and did not have the entertainment business in mind when they were written. Worse, I found that many career coaches out there who specifically target the showbiz market are slimeballs, out to scam newcomers with big dreams.

I had to skim the best of what I read, and match it up to what worked for me and my colleagues. I went on to get hired again (and again), and I began to help my friends in the business with their own career issues. After answering the same questions over and over, I decided to create this site, Career Green Light to make the advice public and open to anyone who needs it.
